We made this ridiculous video for a contest at Duck Hunting weekend. It makes me howl.

Duck Hunting

Lifestyle

For us, the annual duck hunting weekend started off with a tragic accident. We came upon the scene of a horrific collision that involved a drunk driver and innocent girl. The drunk lived and the girl died. I will probably never forget turning the corner on the highway and all of the sudden, seeing two burning vehicles and a man laying limp in between them. We had to swerve hard to miss it all. It was a sickening and anxious scene. I still feel awful for the poor family that lost their daughter.

IMG_7904IMG_7905

When we finally arrived, the hunting began. It was so refreshing to be out in the open air. I didn’t even care if we were gettin’ anything.

Moonin’ Part 2

First of all, a big shout out to all of you who leave comments and love here and on the FB links. I usually get the notifications when I’m at work, hence the lack of response on my part . . . but I’m seein’ them. And they are nice. So thaaaank you!

We spent our last night in San Fran on the outskirts of the city, close to the airport (mad savings on hotels). We were headed south anyways so it was quite nice. Enjoyed a sunny, morning walk by the ocean and watched about 5 planes come land/take off every 2 minutes. I’m not even exaggerating.

Maybe I’m just a naive prairie girl but it was mind boggling.

amanda_affleck_photos_1579

The beginning of our coastal road trip was a little overcast and gloomy, but romantically so. How can it not be romantic when you’re driving alongside cliffs and waves and fog and greenery?

amanda_affleck_photos_1511

amanda_affleck_photos_1512

amanda_affleck_photos_1513

I must have been real busy taking in the view because somehow I failed to snap much that day. We checked out Santa Cruz and meandered around the beach and around the pier. We even snacked on mussels and I didn’t take one photo.

amanda_affleck_photos_1515

We wound up in the most adorable little town called Carmel (by-the-sea).  The beach was the softest, whitest sand I’ve ever felt. We drank hot chocolate and watched the sun set.

And took selfies.

amanda_affleck_photos_1520

amanda_affleck_photos_1516

And then a stranger gave us a little hand a snapped a few for us.

amanda_affleck_photos_1517

I am just putting this on here to remind myself in future years, how hilarious Dane is. Seriously always goofing off.

amanda_affleck_photos_1519

amanda_affleck_photos_1514

Soon night was upon us and we had no hotel booked. Classic.

We asked around and phoned around only to discover that the Annual Poodle Weekend was on in Carmel and therefore, every single hotel/b&b was booked.

So we took a little drive down by the harbor while we decided what our next move would be.

amanda_affleck_photos_1522

amanda_affleck_photos_1523

TARGET. A memory foam, two pillows, a duvet – we were set. We planned to rearrange the backseat of the mini cooper and turn it into a bed.

After a nice supper in downtown Monterrey, we headed for the countryside to find a place to sleep. It did feel a little bit sketch parking on the side of a surprisingly busy little “country” road but the options were limited.

Nothing like startin’ your morning with a solid teeth-cleaning sesh in the woods.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

Can’t say it was the most comfortable sleep I’ve ever had but it sure was a pretty morning.

We had heard from some local Carmelions that a must-see along the coast was Hearst Castle. William Randolph Hearst was born into his father’s gold-mining wealth, but topped it off by making himself a major media mogul. He built an enormous, majestic castle on the side of a mountain; it was a huge architectural feat but Julia Morgan, a brilliant and patient female architect, stuck by his side and made his dreams a reality.

I became a big fan of ceiling art. How amazing is this . . .

amanda_affleck_photos_1539

amanda_affleck_photos_1540

amanda_affleck_photos_1541

Mr. Hearst loved to fill the castle up with friends and create a wildly entertaining experience for them. He had a large private zoo, tennis courts, beautiful pools, horses, and almost every source of entertainment available in his day.

. . . before hitting the highway again, on to Paso Robles. We were hoping to tour a vineyard in that area but time was tight so we settled for one a slightly-less out of the way. It was called Niner Wine Estates.

The below picture makes me chuckle – it’s kinda typical us. We’re both pretty independent so we sometimes pull each other in opposite directions . . .

amanda_affleck_photos_1588

But eventually we end up fusing our ideas and running off together. And I mean that in the most non-gaggish way.

amanda_affleck_photos_1589

amanda_affleck_photos_1590

amanda_affleck_photos_1591

amanda_affleck_photos_1592

We ended our night with a 20 minute speed shop at an outlet mall, and an American supper at a hip little warehouse joint.

amanda_affleck_photos_1593

These photos make it look a lot greasier than it was. I’m not claiming that it was the healthiest of choices, but it was definitely better than it appears here. The restaurant was called The Local Pheasant and if I was a local, I’d be a regular.

amanda_affleck_photos_1594

amanda_affleck_photos_1595

amanda_affleck_photos_1596

Open air. Exposed pipes and beams. Brick. My favorite style of windows. Pretty cute.

amanda_affleck_photos_1597

A few shuttles, cab rides, hotels and airports later, we arrived back on prairie ground ready to make the big move. Hilariously enough, I’ve joined Dane and his room-mate in what we call The Dungeon. If it was truly dungeon-like, I wouldn’t last very long; but its humble and liveable and will do the trick for now! And Andy is the easiest person in the world to get along with so there’s not too much to complain about :)

I’m still playing catch up here, so lots more content to come!

As well, we are having a wedding tea in Emerald Park this coming Saturday – if you want details, message me :)

Inspiration

Ok. I’m temporarily skipping the blog post about our wedding. Only because we have 2 wedding teas to happen within the month and I don’t want to spoil everything by posting it all on the blog now.

But. It will come!

Instead I’m going to post shots from our honeymoon in Cali. Woo hoo. Fair warning. This is a massively long post.

It started with caffeine and airports. We were running on fumes and maaaybe 3 hours sleep. I don’t know if you’ve ever planned a wedding in 1.5 months but it is buuusy and I was definitely ready to chill.

So more coffee.

We arrived in Van ready to board the cruise ship, but it wasn’t quite ready for us so we meandered around town a wee bit and tried to keep our eyes open.

amanda_affleck_photos_1403

After crazy customs lines and hoards of people, we finally got onboard. Funniest thing (well, funny now). When we walked in the room, by this time exhausted and ready to crash, they had 2 single beds for us. I mentioned to the room-keeper that we were on our honeymoon and probably wanted a double, so he says (in broken English) “ok I’ll push them together for you”. Not knowing that that’s what they do for all beds on cruise ships (you can’t fit a queen bed down the hallways) I was kinda not excited about that idea. However, it turned out to be quite plush and we had lots of good sleeps and naps on it.

The Proposal

Thursday, August 7, 2014. He popped the question.

amanda_affleck_photos_1334 amanda_affleck_photos_1335

Dane spent the summer working out of Regina so planning a Saskatoon proposal meant he needed some help. His friends went waaaaay above and beyond helping. They flippin’ worked their hineys off to set up the most beautiful little area where we spent the evening. It was so.crazy.

amanda_affleck_photos_1336

Complete with a BBQ, generator (hidden in a bush with wood covering it to drown the sound), extension cords strewn all over the woods to light the place up, candles everywhere, flowers everywhere, a little firepit and wood … it went on and on and on. So much work.

amanda_affleck_photos_1337

Kebabs and salade.

amanda_affleck_photos_1338 amanda_affleck_photos_1339

People always asked if I saw it coming. The truth is, I kinda did. He was dropping some mad hints about marriage and we had discussed it (and all the benefits) quite often. Buuut, the night he did it, shocked me. It was the most impractical day for him to do it. We were flying out to Van from Regina on Saturday, and he randomly drove up to Saskatoon on the Thursday evening before (he had to work Friday) just to do this. I guess it’s not “just”. It’s kind of a huge deal. But you know what I mean.

amanda_affleck_photos_1340

It was a beautiful evening ❤ I hope I never forget the image of him sitting on the lit-up, rope-wrapped bench, with a big bunch of roses and a nervous grin.
